Last week introduced one of the goals of this blog, and that is to tell stories about our family adventures with the hope that these stories will encourage your family to go on an adventure. So, the Florida Series Part 1, was introduced. Check it out if you’re looking for a great park just off I-75 when you’re heading to the beach this summer.
This week we will wrap up the, Florida Series, with part 2. Our family spent a lot of time this winter in Florida, because my parents (full time RVers) were camping in central Florida all winter. One of, if not, our favorite park to visit was Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. The park is located about 75 miles north of Tampa and about 90 miles west of Orlando. In our family’s opinion, it would be well worth the trip. It’s a beautiful place with a unique opportunity to get up close to wildlife.
Here’s what you might need at Homosassa:
- Bring a picnic
- Walking Shoes
- Clothes to get wet if you decide to get out on the water
This is a perfect park for families and young kids. The walking paths are either paved or elevated boardwalks that take you along trails to see all the wildlife. Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of animals in captivity, but the animals at Homosassa are there because they cannot survive in the wild. Before you head to the wildlife trail, make your first stop at the Fish Bowl. This underwater observatory provides spectacular views of fish and manatees (in the winter) that populate the Crystal River. You might see jacks, snappers, snooks, along with other fish species. After the Fish Bowl, walk the path towards the manatee rescue and rehabilitation center. Here you can catch a glimpse of manatees receiving care until they are ready to be released back into the wild. After the manatees, make your way along the path towards Lu, the hippo, while keeping an eye out for deers and birds. Lu, short for Lucifer, is a former TV star, who calls Homosassa Springs home. You might catch him taking a bath, snacking, or chilling in the pool. Lu leads you to the wildlife walk highlighted by American alligators and crocodiles, Florida panthers, bobcats, a black bear, and numerous bird species.
Make your way to Homosassa Springs this summer to take in this beautiful park. Your family will love it. If you can’t make it this summer, then go in the winter when hundreds of manatees make their way up the river to enjoy warmer waters!
Our favorite parts:
- Florida panthers
- Bobcats
- Singing Flamingos
