Many of us in metro-Atlanta have gone back to school this week or we are headed back to school next week. We’ve had more rainy and cold days than nice, sunny days recently. Though, Saturday looks like the perfect January day to get outside. Sunny and 60 degrees. We have a great adventure for your family, the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site in Cartersville.
This 54 acre site was home to thousands of Native Americans from 1000 A.D.- 1550 A.D. It features six earthen mounds, a plaza, village site, borrow pits, and defensive ditch. The tallest mound is 63 ft. tall!

We love to visit the site. The area around the mounds is flat, which makes for an easy walk and a place for kids to run around as they learn about the rich Native American history in North Georgia. The nature trail follows a beautiful stretch of the Etowah River, where you can see a fish trap used by the Native Americans who inhabited the site. Your family can visit the tops of the mounds via the stairs for awe inspiring views of the historic site.
